2014 was a significant year in the Pacific Northwest. Fantastic triumph and terrible tragedy were part of the story that will enter the history books here.
Early in the year the Seattle Seahawks went to the Super Bowl for only the second time —and won the championship for the first time. The team’s success united the region in that special way that only sports can. An estimated 700,000 people came out to celebrate in downtown Seattle during the Super Bowl Parade.
The Pacific Northwest continued to be an incredible place to experience the natural world, even though changes in our environment are presenting challenges to some creatures. Beauty could always be found.
Also in 2014 we were reminded just how powerful the forces of nature and physics can be, how small we can feel, and how precious life is. The massive mudslide that came down upon the small town of Oso was like a nightmare.
But people and communities came together during a dark time. The US President paid a visit to boost spirits and offer Federal support.
Politics and social issues continued to shape our common experience in 2014. Immigration, police brutality, the increasing income gap, new local political leaders, and new gun laws all dominated headlines.
Despite all the big events and challenges, daily life always continued and our region thrived.
Unfortunately though, more tragedy, death and pain shocked our region and the nation. Two school shootings upended the feeling of security and safety at learning institutions here. Seattle Pacific University and Marysville-Pilchuck High School were both visited by tragedy and horror unleashed by men with firearms.
Again, despite the heartache, we always found time for fun and celebration.
And the people of the Seattle region made our community the wonderful, fascinating and unpredictable place that it is.
