Seattle teachers strike

Story by Joshua Trujillo September 17th, 2015

For the first time in 30 years Seattle Public School teachers took to picket lines to strike. Many parents and students joined in supporting the educators. The five day strike came after months of failed negotiations between the Seattle Education Association and the Seattle Public Schools district.

If formally approved by union members, the contract will result in pay raises and cost of living raises for educators. Test scores may no longer play a role in teacher evaluations, and frequency of student testing will come with teacher input. Educators will be paid for longer school days, and the teacher to student ratio for special education students will be lowered.

These photos document scenes on the picket lines, at school headquarters and the support from students and parents.
